Privacy Challenges and their Impact on Software Development

Description

This event will focus on how organizations can demonstrate respect towards their client privacy rights. We will discuss responsibilities and principles under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The keynote talk will establish the framework for the panel discussion by exploring the relationship between security and privacy, the value of privacy, privacy by design strategies in software development, and the reasons why usually developers do not embed privacy in their designs. Then, the panel will focus on discussing how limiting data collection play a major role in enhancing privacy and will discuss privacy safeguards and how they apply to tech startups and business owners.

*Limiting data collection- The collection of personal information must be limited to that which is needed for the purposes identified by the organization. Information must be collected by fair and lawful means.

*Safeguards- Personal information must be protected by appropriate security relative to the sensitivity of the information.

Understanding data protection principles businesses must follow (Accountability; Identifying purposes; Consent; Limiting collection; Limiting use, disclosure, and retention; Accuracy; Safeguards; Openness; Individual access; Providing recourse to clients.)

Understanding of personal data and information, the background and principles of data protection, the consequences of not adhering to applicable laws and regulations, and business owners’ responsibilities with respect to data protection.
